Heed these totally handy tips on how to ruin your summer holiday. In other words do the complete opposite.

Heed these totally handy tips on how to ruin your summer holiday. In other words do the complete opposite.

1. Forget your passport

“Darling, have you got the passports?” “I thought you had them?” Realising that you are passport-less, preferably while you are stuck in traffic on the M25, gets the holiday off to a flier. YOU are to blame. YOU have ruined everything. While you don’t actually need a passport for domestic flights with British Airways, US immigration officials won’t accept your Tesco Clubcard as valid ID.

2. Cut it fine’

“Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of time!” You haven’t. You’re late. You’re other half was right: it is better to kill five hours at the airport than use your holidays to learn the hard lessons of time management. For added excitement, ensure that your journey to the airport includes border crossings, out-of-date timetables, unlicensed taxi drivers…  Even better, celebrate getting to the airport just in time by getting drunk, and miss your flight.

3. Get very drunk…

and become abusive to fellow passengers on the plane/have your passport confiscated/nick a policeman’s helmet. At the risk of coming across as a killjoy, downing 11 bottles of San Miguel and 16 shots of Sambuca should only be done in the safety of one’s own home, not on a night out in Magaluf. Even if you’re 17. Youth is no excuse. You’re old enough to know better. At the very best you’ll make an utter fool of yourself.

4. Believe the hype

Do your research! Even if your proposed hotel in the Maldives says it’s wonderful on its website, check TripAdvisor etc. The ‘artist’s impression’ of your hotel ‘as it will look like when it opens this summer’ doesn’t show the building site next door, the barbed wire and the sign on the beach advising: ‘beware of the sharks/jellyfish/pirates’.

5. Assume that the weather is always lovely

Check those climate charts. You may be getting a great deal by going to a Caribbean island in September, but you’re not going to get a tan in a hurricane. Likewise, renting a trailer in Tornado Alley in May could be a risky strategy for keeping down the cost of your accommodation.

6. Disrespect local customs

Acting like a typical ‘Brit abroad’ will doubtless endear you to the locals. Behaviour that may be acceptable on a Saturday night out in Chelmsford may not be so in Singapore. If you’re arrested, plead ignorance. “Awfully sorry officer, I didn’t realise it was illegal to openly take drugs/have sex in public. Dubai? What? This isn’t Ibiza?”

7. Make jokes with airport staff

Test the humour threshold of airport security officials with quips about what you’ve got in your bag, be it 1000 pounds of semtex, 135 endangered frogs, or a body.  It is unlikely that they’ll be amused. Likewise don’t joke that you’ve got a bomb in your bag to an air steward – unless you fancy a stay in Guantanamo Bay.

8. Smuggle drugs

Tempted to take home a little souvenir from Thailand? Swallowing 10kg of heroin isn’t good for anyone, in any circumstances. Even it does have a street value of £5 million. Indulging in the local produce, if it’s against the law, obviously carries a risk of getting you in trouble. We don’t need to tell you that.

9. Don’t buy travel insurance

There are a number of ways in which apparently saving a few quid on travel insurance can backfire, at various levels of seriousness. Losing your bags in transit is a disaster, but not being able to afford to repatriate your body after that fatal bungee jumping accident is a minor inconvenience.

10. Leave your children behind

Obviously you wouldn’t leave Charlie and Lola at home if they are aged six and eight. But if we’re talking teenagers, the statement ‘of course we won’t have a party’ translates as ‘we’re expecting 150’. Enjoy your holiday.

City's airport in Top 10 Travel Channel

City's airport in Top 10 Travel Channel

Winnipeg’s new airport has been named one of the 10 most iconic terminals in the world.

On its website, the Travel Channel said the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport’s atrium and big windows "bring the big sky inside," and praised the terminal’s eco-friendly elements.

That includes the airport’s "smart" mechanical system and the fact it is the only freestanding airport in Canada that’s LEED-certified.

Also on the list are the airports in Singapore, Madrid and Lyon, France.

The Asia Pacific tourism decade

The Asia Pacific tourism decade

Teaching tourism the University of Technology-Sydney, it may come as a surprise to many eTN readers that the majority of my post-graduate students are not Australian but Chinese and my experience is common to most Australian universities teaching tourism. However, as China develops as a global tourism superpower, it is hardly surprising that many young Chinese are keen to acquire the skills and knowledge to become tourism professionals in their own country as tourism rapidly develops into one of the leading industries in China.

There is no question that the coming decade leading into 2020 is set to become the Asia Pacific decade in tourism. This year (2012), according to UNWTO forecasts, will be the first year that international tourist arrivals will top the 1 billion figure globally. However, the big news is where that growth is coming from and heading to. It is fair to say that until the 1990s international tourism was largely the preserve and privilege of the Western world. However, times are changing rapidly.

Prince William & Kate's top travel destinations

Prince William & Kate's top travel destinations

It seems like just yesterday I settled down with a cup of tea and a scone smothered in jam to watch the wedding of Prince William and the former Kate Middleton live from London, England. It was 5 a.m. and despite the early hour, thousands in Canada were doing the exact same thing.

Since their fairy tale wedding on April 29, 2011, Prince William and Catherine, the new Duchess of Cambridge, have thrilled the world with their common touch, good looks and genuinely pleasant demeanour.

The newlywed couple has also participated in a number of official Royal engagements both at home and far across the globe. As William and Kate prepare to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, we take a look at the top five travel destinations of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in their first year of marriage.

1. Seychelles: Prince William and Kate honeymooned on the Seychelles’ North Island in May 2011. The private island has 11 guest villas and the newlyweds reportedly rented the entire island at a cost of $711,459.36 for a completely secluded getaway. Here, Wills and Kate enjoyed posh accommodations and exciting activities like sea kayaking, scuba diving and boating.

2. Dalvay-by-the-Sea, Prince Edward Island: While the July 2011 Canadian tour of Prince William and Kate began in Ottawa, it was in Prince Edward Island that the couple really relaxed and showed off their true personalities during the events of the day. They joked with each other while competing in a dragon boat race, embraced Canada’s First Nations culture during a traditional Mi’kmaq smudging ceremony and devoured lobsters and clams on the beach. Prince William also captivated the crowds with a helicopter ‘water bird’ landing emergency exercise.

3. Skoki Lodge, Banff, Alberta: After making a surprise visit to the wildfire ravaged town of Slave Lake, Alta., Prince William and Kate boarded a helicopter and were flown to Banff National Park where they stayed for a night of private time during their Canadian tour. Skoki Lodge hosted the Royals in their Riverside Cabin. Wills and Kate ate from the same menu as all guests, choosing to dine on beef, baked vegetables and B.C. wine. They also went on a private walk, without security, from their cabin along the local hiking trails.

4. Los Angeles, California: Prince William and Kate arrived in California from Canada in July 2011 to promote British trade and investment in the United States. The highlight of their West Coast trip was the BAFTA Brits to Watch gala at the historic Belasco Theater. The Duke and Duchess defined glamour at the event, choosing to dress in a dashing tux and flowing lilac Alexander McQueen dress, respectively. Celebrity attendees like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman and Tom Hanks were left in awe of the stunning Royal couple.

5. Verbier, Switzerland: After returning from a six week RAF deployment in the Falkland Islands, Prince William returned to Kate, and England, in March 2012. He immediately whisked her away on a ski vacation in the posh Swiss resort town of Verbier. The couple loves to ski and it’s been reported that Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael, have joined the couple on holiday.

With Diamond Jubilee visits planned for the young Royals to Malaysia, Singapore, the Soloman Islands and Tuvalu this year, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s world travels are just beginning.

New era in budget travel to Asia as AirAsia X lands

New era in budget travel to Asia as AirAsia X lands

The airline will operate daily flights to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, with new one-way sale fares from $199 for online bookings until Thursday.

It also has fly-thru promotional fares to Japan, Bali, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam from $239.

Singapore Airline's budget offshoot Scoot will also begin flying from Sydney to Singapore in July.

The new airlines will make it quicker and cheaper to get to Asia than ever before, with AirAsia X offering links to more than 80 destinations.

Sydney is AirAsia X's fourth Australian destination after the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Perth and its move into the Harbour City had been highly anticipated for some time.

The airline had previously been denied permission to fly from Sydney by the Malaysian Government, despite receiving the green light from local authorities, because it wanted to protect its national carrier from aggressive new price competition.

Travellers are encouraged to book their value-added services such as Check-in Baggage, Hot Seats, Pick-A-Seat and Insure online together with their flights as they are able to save up to 50% by doing so.
