Trip to Petra with Tripmart.com

Trip to Petra with Tripmart.com

Petra, the fabled "rose red city, half as old as time", is a well known ancient Nabataean city in the south of Jordan. Due to its breathtaking grandeur and fabulous ruins, Petra was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

Petra was the impressive capital of the Nabataean kingdom from around the 6th century BC. The kingdom was absorbed into the Roman Empire in AD 106 and the Romans continued to expand the city. An important center for trade and commerce, Petra continued to flourish until a catastrophic earthquake destroyed buildings and crippled vital water management systems around AD 663. After Saladin's conquest of the Middle East in 1189, Petra was abandoned and the memory of it was lost to the West.

The ruins remained hidden to most of the world until the Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab scholar, infiltrated the Bedouin-occupied city in 1812. Burckhardt's accounts of his travels inspired other Western explorers and historians to discover the ancient city further. The most famous of these was David Roberts, a Scottish artist who created a number of accurate and detailed illustrations of the city in 1839.

The first real excavations of the site were in 1929 after the forming of Trans-Jordan. Since that time, Petra has become by far Jordan's largest tourist attraction, partially due to the exposure by the Steven Spielberg movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in 1989. Due to the fantastic engineering accomplishments and well-preserved dimension of Petra, the archaeological site was chosen in July 2007 as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Trip to Lake Baikal with Tripmart.com

Lake Baikal (Russian: Байка́л bigh-KAHL) is a lake in Eastern Siberia, Russia. It is the biggest and deepest freshwater lake in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The lake is located in Eastern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and Buryatia to the southeast. It is the planet's deepest (1637m) and oldest lake, as well as its largest body of freshwater, containing over one fifth of the world's supply. The origins of the name are unknown, but several hypotheses are these : deep water (Yakut), rich lake (Turkic), rich fire (Mongolian), northern sea (Chinese). Russians sometimes call the lake Baikal sea because of its size.

The lake's geological formation started around 20-25 million years ago in the Mesozoic era and even nowadays its rift is continuing to widen 2cm a year.First mention of its name appeared in Chinese writings in 110 year B.C. as "Beihai" (Northern Sea). Since then several cultures have been changing on its shores when in the XVIII century Buryat nationality came into being. The Russian sources first mention Baikal in 1640. The further centuries are the time of exploration and description by Russian Cossacks and the Church till first scientific expedition in 1723. On 13, October, 1905 the Circum-Baikal Railway is opened. In 1916 Barguzinsky Nature Reserve is organized. 1990 is the year when wind-surfers from Russia, Austria and Czechoslovakia first cross the widest place of the lake. In 1991 the deepest spot on the lake's bottom is reached. 1997 and the Baikal is a part of UNESCO Heritage. The vessel "Sevan" begins cruise tours in 2003.

Baikal ice

Baikal mountains surrounding the valley and the lake consist of a few ranges. In the west there are the Baikal Mountains, in the east the Zabaikalskie Mountains. The Angara River is the only outflow of Lake Baikal. The ranges, rivers and valleys are tourist attractions of their own.

Trip to Dead Sea, Jordan with Tripmart.com

Trip to Dead Sea, Jordan with Tripmart.com

The Dead Sea (Hebrew: ים המלח, Hebrew transliteration:Yam HaMelach; Arabic: البحر الميت, Arabic transliteration: al-Bahir al-Mayyit) has its eastern coast in Jordan. It is the lowest point in the world at 394.6 m (1269 ft) below sea level.

On the Jordanian side, the Dead Sea is possible as a day trip from both Amman and Aqaba. The road is a good dual carriage way. Tourist areas are accessible from the main road that runs along the eastern side of the body of water and connects to Jordan's Desert Highway running to Amman. Highways leading to the Dead Sea are clearly marked by brown tourist signs. It is an ambitious 3-hour drive from Aqaba in southern Jordan.

Taxi services for travel to the Dead Sea can be purchased for the day 20JD if you hail a cab from down town, down town hotels charge 35JD for the same service. Many of the local hotels and resorts have shuttles that travel from Amman to the Dead Sea for a fee. There are a handful of bus lines that also run from Amman on a daily basis. Bus from Mujaharin bus station to Rame costs 1 JD. Taxi from Rame to Amman Beach 4JD or less. Especially on good weather Fridays and Sundays, busses leave from Muhajarin bus station directly for Amman Beach, but if not they will at least drop you of along the road only a couple of kilometers before reaching the Sea. If you are used to hitchhiking it is then very easy to get a lift onwards.

From Aqaba a taxi can be hired for a full day. If booked through the reception of a nice hotel expect to pay about 100 JD. If you find a driver on your own you an haggle and get the price down quite a bit (80 JD in January 2010 - possibly better deals can be agreed on). Make sure to arrange with the driver before you leave if you also want to stop by any other sites as part of your trip as the diver may not want to drive any farther than initially agreed.

The cost to enter the public tourist beach (Amman Beach) is 16 JD (April 2012) (with swimming pools) and 11JD for the Locals/Jordian beach (it's only 15m to left of the tourist entrance; not recommended for women on Fridays). Many hotels also sell day passes that include full use of hotel facilities as well as their Dead Sea beachfronts; at the Mövenpick Resort, day passes cost 20 JD per person for hotel guests, while non-hotel guests pay 40 JD on weekdays and 50 JD on weekend.

Around 10km south of Amman Beach is a local's favourite place that is easily recognized by a couple of stands selling snacks and water near the road. The place is dirty and nobody takes care of it, but if you're on a shoestring, the Dead Sea there is just as good as everywhere. There is a small water fall coming from a hot spring that can serve as a shower afterwards to wash off the salt from your skin. Getting a lift from there back to Amman is easy and occasionally even busses pass by on which you can jump on for a small fee.

Business travelers going rogue

Business travelers going rogue

SHERMAN, Connecticut—U.S. business travelers have more control of their own bookings than ever before, which means hoteliers should think outside of corporate travel policies and consider the end user, according to PhoCusWright research.

“You have to think of them as free agents,” said Carroll Rheem, director of research, during a webinar titled, “The U.S. Business Traveler: Managed, Unmanaged and Rogue.”

Whereas the focus in the past rested primarily ontravel managers because they were the decision makers, today hoteliers must place greater emphasis on the travelers themselves, she said. For one thing, unmanaged business travelers—those who aren’t constrained by a corporate travel manager—make up approximately 70% of the market, Rheem said, citing numbers from a recent special project PhoCusWright conducted.

For another, most business travelers lack a travel planning routine, which suggests hoteliers have an opportunity to provide a better booking platform to capture market share, she said. Only 29% of business travelers have a booking routine. “Even among the managed group the response is only 32%,” Rheem said. “… This says there are a lot of opportunities for new development and openness to trying new business models and trying new features. It also says to me there are a lot of problems to be solved.”

Going rogue Rheem focused on several travel segments during the webinar, including hotel, air and car rental. “Ultimately, hotel is the area where we see the most rogue behavior (with managed travelers),” she said. “When you’re in the decision-making process, there are two kinds of scenarios that really drive rogue behavior: Sometimes there are just too many options. … And other times there are just not enough options for you, especially in that mid-range company that doesn’t have a very comprehensive policy.”

The top driver of rogue behavior, however, is convenience, cited by 47% of respondents to PhoCusWright’s study. Price also is an influential driver, cited by 30% of travelers. “Also, loyalty programs are a pretty significant driver,” Rheem said. “One in five road travelers say they accumulate miles or status from a brand that’s outside of company policy. Those points are sticky, and business travelers love those points.”

Booking behavior Seven of 10 unmanaged business travelers said they used online travel agencies when researching travel. Websites for travel providers themselves (e.g., brand.com) was the second most popular, cited by 61% of unmanaged respondent.

Atlantic City gambles on tourism marketing

Atlantic City gambles on tourism marketing

Atlantic City unveiled a $20 million marketing campaign Thursday aimed at luring non-gamblers to the seaside gaming mecca.

Responding to a steady decline in the number of people who visit Atlantic City and to greater competition from surrounding states that have recently enacted legislation allowing full gaming, the resort community is blitzing New York and other nearby metropolitan areas from Boston to Washington with advertising. Starting on April 16, the ads will appear in print, outdoor, radio and television. They were created by Euro RSCG New York.

The campaign, “Do Anything. Do Everything,” is the first initiative of the year-old Atlantic City Alliance, a nonprofit formed by the eight casino operators in Atlantic City. The organization has a $30 million annual budget for the next five years.

“The casino operators understand that it is not just about growing the gaming customer, that they have to have the leisure traveler as well,” said Liza Cartmell, who joined Atlantic City Alliance as president last September.

Atlantic City lost 6 million visitors from 2006 to 2010, attracting fewer than 30 million people last year. The decline will only get worse as more nearby states pass gambling legislation allowing full table gaming. In two years, New York is expected to pass such legislation.

The idea behind the campaign is to attract a new kind of visitor to Atlantic City, playing up its other attributes including fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels, its famous boardwalk and beach. Currently, the average visitor to Atlantic City stays just 16 hours.

“Our goal is to get them to stay at least 24 hours,” said Ms. Cartmell, who was most recently head of Aramark's sports and entertainment division. “We have to reposition Atlantic City as a tourism destination.”

Atlantic City Alliance is the first organization of its kind in Atlantic City, which also has a visitor's bureau which focuses primarily on drawing meetings and conventions to the area.

The nonprofit is modeling its efforts on Las Vegas, where 40% of the revenues Sin City generates come from gaming-related expenditures. By contrast, 60% of Atlantic City's revenues come from gaming.

Its $30 million budget should be an enormous boost. To put it in context, the state of New Jersey has just $11 million to spend on tourism promotion, while New York City's budget is just over $36 million.
In a statement, Gov. Chris Christie said, “Transforming Atlantic City's gaming and tourism economy and developing it into a world-class destination and resort is a vital commitment of this administration. With this newly integrated tourism campaign, there is finally a concerted effort to properly fund Atlantic City marketing initiatives to attract visitors to the region, a need that has gone unmet for far too long.”

Last year, the New Jersey state legislature paved the way for Atlantic City to be designated a tourism district, charging the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority with marketing it.

Atlantic City leads the rest of the state in tourist spending. Visitors to Atlantic County last year spent $10.6 billion.

ARC Says Value of U.S. Air Tickets Booked by Agents is Up 6.57 Percent

ARC Says Value of U.S. Air Tickets Booked by Agents is Up 6.57 Percent

The value of airline tickets booked by travel agents in the first quarter is 6.57 percent ahead of last year, according to ARC, and 18 percent over the value of tickets sold in 2010. January through March 2012 ticket sales totaled $23.3 billion, compared to $21.9 billion in 2011, and $19.8 billion in 2010. The number of transactions is up 1 percent; that means most of the increase reflects higher fares. Sales were out of 13,914 retail locations, down from 13,992 in February.

For the month of March, total sales dipped 0.12 percent to $8.3 billion year-over-year. They were $23.3 billion year-to -date, a 6.57 percent increase over the same period a year earlier. Domestic fares were down slightly, 1 percent to $3.5 million in March 2012 over March 2011, but were up 5.69 percent to $9.9 million year-to-date over the same period in 2011. Another indicator of the increase in the cost of airline tickets was the fact that the number of domestic transactions was down 5.54 percent to 9.3 million in March. Year-to-date domestic transactions were down 0.26 percent to 27.6 million.

International fares, however, were down 6.72 percent to $3.2 billion in March, but down just 0.37 percent to $8.9 billion year-to-date. International transactions were down 3.63 percent to 4 million in March and down 2.78 percent year-to-date to 11.6 million.Total fares were down 3.85 percent to $6.7 billion in March, but were up 2.74 percent year to date to $18.8 billion.

A mountain retreat from the Texas heat

A mountain retreat from the Texas heat

During the summer of 1980, smack in the middle of that recording-setting 42-day stretch of 100-plus degrees, I ventured into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the first time. And it was bliss: During the drive through the rich forest up Newfound Gap Road, the temperatures slowly dropped into the 60s as the elevation increased to nearly a mile. In the 32 years since, I've not forgotten the utter relief I experienced that July day.

Regardless of whether we endure another scorcher this summer, my advice is to head for those chill hills when it's too warm here. I returned for the first time last month, finding their solace and beauty every bit as transformative as all those summers ago. What's more, I found a lot more to do near the park this time, thanks to the vast development of Pigeon Forge.

One of Tennessee's gateway towns to the national park, Pigeon Forge distinguishes itself with a pairing of attractions you won't find anywhere else: The world's largest Titanic museum, of all things, sits in this little tourist town, and Dollywood, Dolly Parton's wildly popular theme park, resides here, as well. Visits to both should be made now, as the centennial of the great ship's sinking is marked April 15, and the iconic country music star has just opened a remarkable roller coaster at her place.

If you want to be among the smart travelers fleeing the heat this summer, plan this trip before rooms sell out. Here's a plan of attack for a trip you're sure to remember two or three decades down the road.

Board the Titanic museum

Granted, the town of Pigeon Forge screams "tourist trap" in some corners, what with a proliferation of country music variety shows and comedy dinner theater, plus a startling abundance of pancake cafes. That makes the sophistication of Titanic -- subtitled "the world's largest museum attraction" -- all the more remarkable. (And clever, too, as 11 million people drive down the Parkway, Pigeon Forge's main drag and Titanic's locale, each year.)

Upon entry, you receive a boarding pass bearing the name of an actual Titanic passenger or crew member, one of the 2,208 men, women or children who boarded the ship in Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912; Cherbourg, France, later that same date; or Queenstown, Ireland, on April 11. In the two or three hours you're touring the museum, you see much of what that person saw, heard and learned before the ship struck the fatal iceberg late on April 14. At the end of your time in Titanic, you will visit the Memorial Room to find out what happened in the frigid waters before dawn April 15 to the person whose name you've been holding.

Each turn you take in the 20 galleries within this 30,000-square-foot building shaped like a ship makes you forget you're in a museum. The front half of the place is a re-creation, but half the size of the original. In each room, passage and deck, you're enthralled with hundreds of artifacts, each carried off the ship by its passengers and crew members or recovered from the sea at the time of its sinking, during the rescue work.

That these pieces of jewelry, record logs, letters, clothing, furniture, luggage, dishes and much more have survived seems miraculous. Perhaps more impressive, the collection of photographs taken by Father Francis Browne, a Jesuit priest from Ireland who sailed on Titanic just between the English and Irish ports at the outset, provide a look at people and scenes on the ship not found anywhere else. Stories of passengers -- not just the famous ones, like Margaret "the unsinkable Molly" Brown of Denver and John Jacob Astor IV -- and their ordeal can't be seen as anything less than fascinating.

Interactive displays keep younger visitors entertained. You can learn to send a wireless SOS signal, and you can stand on a deck in the freezing night air, touching a mountain of ice that imitates the one that sank Titanic and sticking your hand in icy water like that in which the unlucky souls who didn't get on a lifeboat perished.

Among the astounding reproductions of some of the ship's sections, including cabins and staterooms, none impresses more than the grand first-class staircase that connected A-Deck and B-Deck. An exact copy, made from Titanic's builders' plans, lets you walk up and down the stairs beneath that famous wrought iron-and-glass dome where Jack watched Rose descend in the James Cameron movie.
