Malaysia's Malacca thrives with history

Malaysia's Malacca thrives with history

On the tranquil grounds of the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malaysia's oldest Taoist house of worship, late afternoon visitors bowed and offered burning wands of incense to a gilded statue of the Goddess of Mercy, the deity for whom the temple was founded in the 1600s. Tourists quietly watched or focused cameras on the structure's ornate, figurine-covered roof.

The placidity was interrupted by the muezzin's call from the nearby Kampung Kling Mosque, an amalgam of Corinthian columns, Portuguese tiles and Hindu carvings, built by Indian Muslims in 1748. And down the street at the 230-year-old Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple, the country's oldest Hindu temple, bare-chested and barefoot men in pastel-hued sarongs and garlands made of yellow blooms gathered to pray.

It was another seemingly sleepy afternoon in Malacca, Malaysia's oldest city, just two hours south of Kuala Lumpur and about four hours northwest of Singapore. But underneath that sleepiness, its foundation of vibrant multiculturalism, which dates back centuries, is very much alive and increasingly accessible, as it welcomes a handful of hotels and millions of international visitors a year.

"I just love Malacca — its laid-back, slow pace of life and the history in the buildings, the people, the culture," said a local resident, Colin Goh, 66, at Cheng Hoon, surrounded by a pair of red-and-gold sedan chairs and black-and-white photos that chronicled decades of the temple's religious festivals. "Everything you touch that is not new is old."

With his mix of Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and "God only knows what else" heritage, Goh, a retired civil servant who now manages 8 Heeren Street, a restored 18th-century Dutch shophouse, embodies the city's colonial past. Founded around 1400 by a Malay-Hindu prince, Malacca, within a century, became Southeast Asia's most important trading port, luring an international cast of colonialists and merchants seeking a piece of the region's lucrative spice trade.

The hub of Malacca's civic colonial sites is Dutch Square — also called Red Square because of the color of its buildings — where tourists pose in front of the century-old Queen Victoria Fountain and trishaws festooned with plastic flowers gather. Nearby are the ruins of the A'Famosa fort, one of Asia's oldest European-built structures, erected by the Portuguese 500 years ago, and the imposing Stadthuys, or town hall, built by the Dutch in 1650 and later painted salmon red by the British, Malacca's last foreign rulers, whose reign lasted until 1957.

On the west side of the Malacca River, which flanks the square, along the old center's narrow, atmospheric streets, are hundreds of lantern-hung shophouses, some distinctly Chinese in style, others bearing geometric Art Deco trademarks, and grand residences with ornately tiled stoops built by wealthy families of the past. For centuries, these streets served as the town's commercial and residential center.

Malacca's eclectic charm, with some help from a UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2008 and its reputation as one of Malaysia's most exciting culinary destinations, has resulted in a steady growth in tourism. Last year 12 million visitors came, an increase of over 17 percent from 2010, according to a state tourism committee.

While some heritage buildings are still occupied by generations-old family businesses — silversmiths, watchmakers, dim sum purveyors — others have newer identities. At Temple Street, a shop run by a local artist, watercolors and hand-painted tiles depict idyllic street scenes. In another building, Nancy's Kitchen, a no-frills restaurant known for its local Nyonya cuisine, sells addictive delicacies like buttery pineapple tarts and onde-onde, glutinous rice balls filled with Malacca's famous palm sugar, known as gula Melaka, and covered in fresh coconut.

KL — World-class city in the making

PLANNING, development and management of Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia and a major city in this region, sharing a vision among all stakeholders towards making Kuala Lumpur a World-Class City by 2020.

Realising the vision is important in providing a uniform focus for the public including traders, investors, government organisations and NGOs.

The Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020 (KLSP 2020), which was gazetted in November 2004, emphasises the vision by outlining goals, development strategies and policies of the development of Kuala Lumpur.

The draft local plan for Kuala Lumpur, known as Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 (KLCP 2020), has been prepared for the purpose of translating KLSP 2020 goals, strategies and policies into specific strategic directions including the determination of land use and development for each property lot in Kuala Lumpur.

With this plan, the development control process can be implemented with more transparency and could expedite decision-making processes. Other than improving Kuala Lumpur City Hall's level of services, the plan can also be used to market Kuala Lumpur at the international level.

With the development initiatives that cover various aspects such as transportation, housing, trade and tourism, this plan will also support government efforts in re-branding Kuala Lumpur as an important city in the region.

Get, set, go: F1 fans head to Malaysia
From the never-say-die Michael Schumacher fans with a chequered history of two decades to the new-age Sebastian Vettel fanatics, Indians sure know where their loyalties and priorities lie in Formula One.

But it seems following F1 action on TV is passe. Many are now keen to catch the action up close after having tasted the thrill of being in the zone during the Indian GP last year in Noida. The big race might have happened at the Buddh Circuit in Delhi, but there was a mass exodus of fans from Chennai, the birthplace of Indian motorsport, to the national capital.

This year, the 'F1 pilgrims' are taking it to the next level, with fans, especially from south India, willing to shell out their hard-earned bucks to catch some action abroad, mainly to venues nearby (Malaysia and Singapore). They do have their home-grown lad to cheer also - Coimbatore-born and Chennai-bred Narain Karthikeyan being the only Indian on the grid in F1 this season, driving for Spanish team Hispania Racing.

With the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend coming up, many fans are already en route to the Sepang International Circuit. Low-cost carrier AirAsia, which recently launched its Chennai-Bangkok flight, has got close to 2,000 bookings from India with a majority of them coming from Bangalore. As part of its promotional offering, the airline is giving a special fare (4,100 one way) from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur.

"We expect more bookings closer to the event and our fares are 30-40% lower than others," Jasmine Lee, head, commercial. AirAsia said. "We acknowledge all events and come out with special fares during festive seasons and other events," added Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer, Thai AirAsia.

Similarly, Jet Airways, which has partnered with Tourism Malaysia to offer complimentary passes for the Malaysian GP, has seen a 30% increase in packages sold when compared to last year. "The Indian Grand Prix, the first Formula One Grand Prix that was held in the country has garnered a huge response with a dedicated fan following. And with corporates pitching in, this sport has grown considerably in the past couple of years," a Jet Airways spokesperson said. Like AirAsia, a majority of the bookings for Jet have come in from south India and Mumbai.

Malaysia Airlines is also offering a host of promotional deals since the beginning of the month to travelers from New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore. Apart from the Grand Prix, the Putrajaya water festival will be on till the month end in the region.

"Our special fares will allow travellers to experience international destinations at value prices with flexible travel dates," Azahar Bin Hamid, regional senior vice president, south Asia and Middle East, Malaysia Airlines said.

Leveraging on Malaysian diaspora

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    social@tripmart.com
Leveraging on Malaysian diaspora
MALAYSIANS are resilient people who can thrive anywhere in the world, whether as students or in trade. This is perhaps a reflection of who we are and our heritage as a maritime, sojourning people since the time of the Malaccan Empire. Hence, I make it a point to meet with Malaysians abroad whenever I travel. Some of them have had remarkable achievements: executive chairmen/CEOs/CFOs of multinational companies, professors and students in prestigious universities, as well as founders of multi-million-dollar businesses.
I've met all sorts of Malaysians, from the Oman Air pilot who flew me to Jeddah to a gentleman who runs the Hong Leong Group-owned Bank of Chengdu in China and the owner of one of Thailand's biggest auto component-making companies.
In my recent trip to Myanmar, I was surprised to find how well Malaysians are doing in the logistics industry there. They all tell that while work and business have taken them thousands of miles away from home, they remain loyal Malaysians at heart.
According to the World Bank, there are more than a million Malaysians working abroad. They may not have immediate plans to return to Malaysia but I still consider them our assets goodwill ambassadors for the country. Instead of bemoaning the fact we are suffering from a “brain drain”, we should instead leverage on the global Malaysian diaspora to promote our economic agenda abroad.
Of the one million Malaysians overseas, about 12% are in Australia, 9% in Brunei, 8% in the United States, another 8% in Britain, 3% in Canada, and 46% in Singapore. Many work as professionals in banking, construction, engineering, medicine, and legal and information and communcation technology services. Some teach or undertake research in universities, and many others have their own businesses. In Britain alone, about 36% of Malaysians working there are professionals.
While the Government continues with its economic transformation agenda to create high-income economy and jobs to lure these Malaysians home, we must also tap into their networks to our advantage.
Indeed, the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI), through its agencies the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), is leading this initiative to help Malaysian companies market their products overseas and attract foreign investments. And the Malaysian diaspora has a major role to play. MITI is leveraging on the presence of Malaysians overseas. For a start, they can help to link up government agencies with Malaysian companies abroad. This will enable our agencies to support these businesses more effectively.
In countries where English isn't widely used, the Malaysian community there can act as translators or interlocutors for Malaysian companies seeking to expand there. They can also gain from the business opportunities made available along the value chain by becoming buyers, importers and distributors of Malaysian products. We need to forge these symbiotic ties that benefit all Malaysian parties involved, everywhere.
Business aside, the Malaysian diaspora can help the country by countering inaccurate portrayals of Malaysia especially in the economic sphere. For instance, Malaysians abroad can counter the negative publicity that Malaysia suffers with regards to palm oil plantations and the environment. Those who are familiar with the issue can shed light on our government and corporate-driven initiatives to protect the environment through sustainable forest management.
Malaysians abroad should also join local chambers of commerce and bilateral business councils to stay in touch with developments at home.
Examples of such organisations include the Overseas Malaysian Executive Council of the United Kingdom; Malaysian Association in the Philippines; Malaysia-Myanmar Business Council; Malaysia-Thai Chamber of Commerce; Malaysia Association of Canada; Malaysia Business Council in Jeddah; Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Taipei; and Malaysia Association of Southern California. Matrade's trade commissioners overseas regularly interact with these organisations to keep them informed of business opportunities.
In Saudi Arabia, for example, the Malaysia Business Council has helped to promote the Malaysia My Second Home Programme. It has also helped publicise Malaysia as a tourism destination, business hub and centre for educational excellence.
Overseas Malaysians are also managing restaurants abroad for the Malaysia Kitchen Programme (MKP). The MKP takes advantage of their skills and familiarity with local tastes to promote Malaysian cuisine. The Malaysian Kitchen website reports that there are over 50 Malaysian restaurants in the United Kingdom. As I mentioned in my speech when officiating Makan-Makan Bistro in Perth last October, such restaurants have a unique role to play in promoting Malaysia, especially as a tourism destination.

TRAVEL MALAYSIA ON A BUDGET

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    social@tripmart.com
TRAVEL MALAYSIA ON A BUDGET
The southeast Asian country of Malaysia has been steadily growing as a top destination for tourists from abroad. With the same laid back lifestyle as Thailand and great food and sights to see, there are still places which have not yet been flooded with package tourism.
For anyone searching for quality low cost holidays, Malaysia should be near the top of the list. Below are the top five destinations and activities in this beautiful country:
Penang
A British colony in its past, this thriving city is set on an island off the coast of Malaysia. A melting pot of cultures and cuisines, the old town area of Georgetown is bursting at the seams with culinary delights from all around Asia and the world. It’s cheap too, with large portions of flavorful dishes at restaurants for the same price as street vendors elsewhere. Lodging is inexpensive as well, with many family run hotels tucked away in small alleyways in the old town.
Lankawi
A jumping point between Malaysia and Thailand, this island is home to one of the biggest annual cycling races in Asia. Friendly locals, jagged mountain peaks and plenty of hiking, swimming and cycling options make it a place worth spending some time at. The entire island is duty-free, so the price of everyday things tends to be cheaper than anywhere else in Malaysia.
Tioman Island
This jewel of an island has been named one of the best islands in the world by Time Magazine. Set off the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula, this island is reachable by boats from several cities on the coast such as Kuantan and Mersing. Cheap but high quality private beach houses, thriving biodiversity and wildlife and some of the best fresh seafood available can be found here.
Perhaps the best reason to go to Tioman Island is the scuba diving though. Because of its relatively unknown status the prices have stayed low and the quality of the diving to be found here is comparable to the best spots in Thailand and Indonesia.
Kota Kinabalu
The biggest city on the island of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu is a budget traveler's paradise. Affordable guesthouses with private rooms and ocean views, a rich cultural history with museums and tours readily available and fresh fruit from markets and street vendors, it is worth a visit. Kota Kinabalu is a great launching point to other budget destinations in Borneo as well, with Mount Kinabalu and the jungles of the Borneo rainforest close by.
Melaka
Malaysia's best destination for culture and history. Earning a place on the World Heritage Sites list by UNESCO in 2008, this city is rich with architectural and cultural diversity. Temples, churches and mosques dot the quiet streets and are surrounded by colonial architecture.
A true melting pot with a mixture of locals, Chinese and Indians, the city also features canals running and street vendors with the best cheap snacks you can imagine. With plenty of budget accommodations and cheap transportation, Melaka is truly a Malaysian paradise.

Singapore woos Indian tourists with new campaign
In strategic collaborations with specialised travel and lifestyle partners in India, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has unveiled its latest plans for the Indian market. “Singapore – The Holiday You Take Home with You,” the third in a series of customised and differentiated marketing campaigns after those in China and Australia, adopts a similar consumer-centric approach.
STB's new marketing campaign focuses on offerings that appeal to the Indian audience.
The campaign rests on four pillars of enriching experiences: family fun, active lifestyle, culinary, and romance.

‘IMPORTANT MARKET'

“India is an important market for us. Today, Indian travellers have discerning travel needs. Indian consumers prefer families to travel and bond together through shared learning experiences.
Many also research and plan their own free and independent traveller itineraries on the Internet, and are eager to try out and learn new things,” Mr Randall Tan, STB's Regional Director for South Asia, said. STB's new campaign wishes to draw an emotional connection between travellers and the destination, Mr Tan said.
Indian tourists to Singapore grew from 8.3 lakh in 2010 to 8.7 lakh in 2011, a 5 per cent year-on-year growth. A total of 13.2 million global tourists visited Singapore in 2011.

DIGITAL THRUST

The campaign is driven largely by a digital thrust that features online and mobile advertising, a dedicated India landing page on the YourSingapore destination Web site, and social media engagement, including a Facebook quiz. The dedicated Web page allows easy navigation and customisation of one's travel itinerary.
It also highlights the new itineraries under culinary, family fun, romance and active lifestyle, travel agent listings and travel essentials, along with a social media component to enable travellers to have first-hand information about the latest events taking place in Singapore.
